Veg of the Week 6/4/20: Turnips

Hello everyone,

It feels strange addressing people in these difficult times, but we hope you are as well as possible given the circumstances.

Before introducing ourselves we want to acknowledge and stand in solidarity with the protests and those that suffer and have suffered from systemic oppression. This is not an isolated incident, we need justice and balance to make our communities whole. To be honest, we feel a bit helpless but we are dedicated to helping our community by donating what we can, including vegetables and vegetable starts, to those in need. Please reach out to us and we will do whatever we can!

We will also be donating all the profits from our coffee sales this week to Campaign Zero, which supports the analysis of policing practices across the country, research to identify effective solutions to end police violence, technical assistance to organizers leading police accountability campaigns and the development of model legislation and advocacy to end police violence nationwide."

Please let us know what you feel we can improve upon, we're here to grow! If you would like quantities not listed or are interested in seeing other products please list it in the comments section and we will be in touch. We will be sending Venmo requests once we have picked your order. If we cannot fulfill your full order we will contact you with what is available and proceed from there.

We've also got some extra tomato starts, if you or someone you know would like some or help get them to people who could grow them that would be great! We currently have a lot of Gold Medal, a large yellow slicer, San Marzano, a sauce/paste type, and a mixed variety of other heirlooms.

These Hakurei and Scarlet Queen turnips are delicious. Fresh as a snack or in salads, hot and cold. Roast them in a pan when small, halved, or quartered to cook them quickly, so that they still retain some rawness. When turnips are larger they are delicious roasted, grilled, or raw.

Hakurei flavor is mild, sweet, with a mild radish-like bite
Scarlet Queen's flavor is rich and spicy with a slightly denser flesh.

While both Hakurei and Scarlet Queen turnip greens are delicious to eat. The Scarlett Queen turnips are best served lightly cooked while Hakurei are best enjoyed fresh or lightly cooked. As a general rule, the younger the turnip is, the more tender the greens are.

Let us know how you enjoy preparing your turnips!
